Best Budget Lighting Setups for Home Portraits

Good home portrait lighting doesn't require expensive studio gear — a few common household items, positioned deliberately, get most of the way there.

A window as your main light

A large window with soft, indirect daylight is one of the best free light sources available — position your subject facing or beside it rather than with their back to it.

A lamp as backlight

A simple desk or floor lamp placed behind the subject can approximate a rim-light effect, especially in a dimmer room where the lamp's glow stands out more clearly.

White foam board as a reflector

A large piece of white foam board or poster board, held opposite your main light source, bounces some of that light back onto the shadowed side of the face — a nearly free substitute for a professional reflector.

Is a cheap clip-on LED light worth buying?

For under $20-30, a small clip-on LED panel is a genuinely useful upgrade over relying purely on room lighting, especially for consistent results after dark.
